Somebody Explain This To Me

Why would Qatar want to build a soccer stadium for an Israeli team?
(Jeremy, feel free to chime in)

From ESPN.COM

Bnei Sakhnin won Israel's State Cup last year, earning it respect among both Jewish and Arab fans. The team has complained of discrimination in the past, noting that it had the lowest budget in its 12-team league.

Qatar last month donated $6 million to build a 13,000-seat stadium for the team.

After Israel's Gaza withdrawal, some Arab states have either taken limited steps to engage Israel diplomatically or expanded upon their existing relationships. Egypt, for example, has signed a new energy deal to export natural gas to Israel and has agreed to send border guards to the Egypt-Gaza border.

Some wealthy Gulf Arab states, such as Qatar, Bahrain, and the UAE have pledged to drop the Arab boycott of Israel (which isn't really in full effect anymore).

Qatar, since its acutal citizenry numbers around 175,000 people (all of whom are loaded), can take more political risks than other states. Hence THE DECISION TO BUILD THE STADIUM.

In the mid 1990s, Qatar opened an Israeli trade office in Doha, which is still there although it may not be fully staffed. When I was in Doha in 2004, I ran into an Israeli couple while shopping for underwear at the mall. British Airways lost my bags.
