The Bush Presidency in Review - Volume 3

Hurricane Katrina

There were a lot of things George W. Bush did wrong. The War. Deregulation. The Environment. But perhaps the biggest mistake of them all was the mishandling of Hurricane Katrina. It started with the appointment of an incompetent campaign contributor to the head of FEMA, which resulted in a tragically inept rescue effort. The political posturing with the Governor of Louisiana did not help this process.

This report, from FOX News' Shepard Smith, remains a poignant memory of those days. Excuse the crappy video quality.

Now, Congress has not helped Bush implement his "Gulf Coast Rebuilding Plan." And for that, Bush cannot take all the blame. And as for Ray Nagin, well, he's the antithesis of Giuliani post-9-11...a political coward with no vision. But the fact remains, as Bush himself clearly pointed out, that the buck stops with him. He failed to carry out his obligation to protect the American people for those few days. And in those days, the Garden District burned, the Superdome became a breeding ground for human sin, and the convention center was turned into a 3rd World refugee camp. Further, he has all but abandoned his effort to lobby for the rebuilding of the Gulf Coast.

As referenced above, everybody has their favorite things to hate about Bush. The War in Iraq. The War in Afghanistan. The fact that he has bad grammar. His Supreme Court nominations. The list goes on. But for me, it's the response to Hurricane Katrina which I most despise him for, and always will.
